“Grace Rain Down” – Here’s the Story… This is a song of mine I love because it’s grooves so hard. It came out of a visit with my sweet grandfather – “Gramp” as we called him – many years ago. Gramp liked to wax philosophical about passages in the Bible that sparked his interest – in this case, why Psalm 23 begins “I SHALL not want” but ends “I WILL dwell…” It turned into a half hour discussion of the difference in “shall” vs. “will.” This was Gramp in all his glory – a stolid New Englander who liked a mental workout, even at 94. I got in my car to go home and the lines “I got the total ammunition for spiritual fruition right in my hand” came to mind as I drove…and then as the wheels bounced along the highway in rhythm, the lines came faster, almost like patter or – dare I say, rap– lyrics, flowing out almost outside of myself. I had the whole first verse written by the time I got home, all in my head, melody and lyric. I had never done that before and I’ve never done it since. The grammar musings over “shall” and “will” became an entire song musing about the seemingly unfair ways we are all important to the mysterious love that I choose to call God. No matter how late we show up, love (God) is always there to welcome us home. I’ve been late most of my life – hence the title of the album this song appears on, “Lost and Found.” Listen and groove on, baby. And welcome home! Love, Gwen |
